About us

Bragato Research Institute (BRI) drives world-leading innovation for the New Zealand wine industry – from new knowledge generation through to the practical application of research in our vineyards, wineries, and supply chain. Launched in 2017, we are a wholly owned subsidiary of New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW), the national industry body for grape growers and wineries.

We drive New Zealand’s grape and wine research, innovation, and extension so our industry can make better business decisions and ensure New Zealand remains renowned for its exceptional wine.

Our values are at the heart of our success:

  • Brave – curious, creative and forward-thinking

  • Relevant – responsive to industry needs

  • People-centred – we share, listen and collaborate

  • Excellent – we deliver high-quality research

About the role

As our Research Winemaker, your key focus will be leading the planning, delivery, and continuous improvement of research winemaking at BRI. You’ll play a pivotal role in translating science into practical, high-quality outcomes for industry, while ensuring our Research Winery operates safely, efficiently, and to best practice standards.

This is a hands-on role that brings together winemaking, research delivery, people leadership, and industry engagement within a collaborative team environment and well-resourced research winery.

What you’ll be doing:

  • End-to-end delivery of research winemaking trials, from planning through to reporting

  • Leading day-to-day operations of the Research Winery, including systems, compliance, and continuous improvement

  • Working closely with scientists to support applied research programmes aligned to industry priorities

  • Collaborating with commercial clients to design and deliver bespoke winemaking trials

  • Managing and developing cellar staff and seasonal team members

  • Contributing to innovation, sensory work, and extension activities

  • Actively contributing to the strategic direction of BRI, with a focus on the winery

About you

You’re an experienced and inquisitive winemaker who enjoys working where science meets industry. You bring a practical, organised approach to your work and are confident building strong, trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

You’re comfortable taking ownership, working independently when needed, and contributing positively within a collaborative, team-focused environment.

You’ll also bring:

  • A Master’s or PhD-level qualification in Oenology, Winemaking, or a related scientific field

  • Demonstrated winemaking experience, ideally with exposure to research, trials, or experimental programmes

  • Experience managing research projects, including planning, delivery, and reporting

  • Proven ability to lead winery operations and support or manage people

About the package

Of course, we offer the essentials – a competitive salary, health insurance, and other benefits. What really sets BRI apart is the opportunity to do meaningful, purpose-led work within a supportive, people-centred environment. You’ll have the space to lead, innovate, and make a genuine impact on the future of the New Zealand wine industry.

What now?

If this role sounds like a great fit and you’re excited about the opportunity to contribute to applied wine research with real industry impact, we’d love to hear from you. Please apply with your CV and a cover letter outlining what you can bring to the role and to BRI.
