Assistant Winemaker – Permanent Role

Matt Connell Wines is on the lookout for a passionate and capable Assistant Winemaker to join our small, hands-on company in the heart of Central Otago.

We craft a diverse range of aromatic whites and Pinot Noir, both under our own label and for a portfolio of high-quality contract clients. Working from our Cromwell-based facility, this is a unique opportunity to play a key role across all stages of production in an environment where your input truly matters.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work closely with the winemaker across all aspects of vineyard intake, fermentation, maturation, and finishing. During vintage you’ll also step up to lead, supervise, and ensure smooth day-to-day cellar operations - sometimes independently.

What we’re looking for

We’re after someone who is confident, practical, and thrives in a dynamic setting.

You’ll bring:

• At least 3 years’ experience in cellar and production, including solid lab knowledge

• Proven staff supervision and leadership/training skills for use during vintage

• A self-driven attitude with the ability to work unsupervised

• Strong forklift skills (licence preferred)

• A tertiary qualification in winemaking

• Confidence in wine tasting and a genuine passion for the craft

• Excellent people skills and communication

• Physically fit and capable of manual plunging a variety of tank sizes up to 5 tonne and dealing with a large amount of barrel work

• A good sense of humour

• Enjoy working by yourself

• Enjoy problem solving and have a can do attitude
