Hawke’s Bay Wine Investments Ltd (HBWI), is a locally-owned, vertically integrated wine Business growing grapes, making wine and building brands that capture the essence of New Zealand.  

The HBWI Portfolio includes Te Awanga Estate, The Hawke’s Bay Wine Company and Portside Wines with vineyards situated across the Hawke’s Bay, producing some of New Zealand’s most exciting wines. Our people are all motivated by the same ambition – to make great wine that reflects our place and ideas.

As a company experiencing domestic and export growth, we are looking to appoint a Viticulturalist who has the experience and initiative to oversee our contracted vineyards and grow supply through contracted, leased, and new vineyard developments.

We currently operate 46Ha of owned and leased vineyards, that are all certified organic with Biogro from vintage 2023 and around 160Ha of contracted growers, certified with Sustainable Winegrowers NZ.

This will be a pivotal role, responsible for delivering excellence in customer service with the efficient development of a balanced national grape supply and customer base. Identifying and progressing business growth within the client base (existing and new) with a particular emphasis on large scale customers and long term contracted supply, that reflect brand reputation and continuous improvement.

We are looking for a motivated person with an understanding and experience of vineyard and winemaking operations. This opportunity will allow you to be part of a progressive wine business building a reputation for making some of New Zealand’s most highly-regarded and awarded wines.  

The key tasks of this role include:

  • Develop and Maintain the grape supply for Te Awanga Estate and Postside Wines through vineyard development, lease, and contracted fruit supply to meet the company’s growth aspirations.
  • Ensuring the viticultural operation of the company is leading edge in vineyard health, quality, yield, risk mitigation and that the company is best placed to advance business growth opportunities.
  • Directing Vineyard operations and Grower liaison throughout the year and harvest logistics.
  • Provide support to the CEO in the development of the financial budget, forecasting proactively around likely market challenges and developing a robust capital program.
  • Ensuring reporting requirements are met and delivered at a Board level as required, including statistical data and business growth opportunities.
  • Develop positive customer and stakeholder relationships to create new opportunities and strategic alliances,
  • Ensuring accurate records and registers are maintained as required by clients,
  • In consultation with the Senior Winemakers; planning, organising intake for winemaking at HBWC in accordance with relevant client wine specifications and within the annual budget,
  • SWNZ – assisting in the maintenance of all systems and records pertaining to SWNZ accreditation and proactively work to minimize our impact on the environment,
  • Where required, actively promote our business through various trade and public functions.
  • Attend courses and seminars and travelling as reasonably required.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Initiative and a positive 'can-do' attitude.
  • A sound working knowledge of grape-growing and the winemaking process and quality.
  • Strong communication and personal skills
  • A clear understanding of the commercial drivers of the wine business
  • Proven and accurate record keeping and organizational skills
  • Experience in use of technical wine industry software.
