Closes: 29 January 2022
Akarua is a 500t winery located in the beautiful Bannockburn subregion of Central Otago. Established in 1996, we now boast 130ha of vineyards in both Pisa and Bannockburn. Akarua produces around 17 different wines each year with a focus on Pinot noir but also small amounts of bubbles, Pinot gris, Chardonnay and Riesling.
About the roles
We are searching for both Cellar Hands and a joint Lab/Cellar Hand position. These are fixed term roles lasting approximately 8 weeks from the end of March until May, depending on the season. Our ideal candidates will have completed several vintages in a similar sized winery, have forklift experience and ideally, have a winemaking qualification. People who are new to the industry will also be considered and we are happy to train enthusiastic, hard working candidates without experience. Health and safety is a priority for us so we expect staff to adhere to all H&S requirements.
The roles during harvest will include varied work in the cellar from receival, destemming, pressing, daily punch downs, barrel downs and other tasks when required. We try to provide a diverse experience so, if you show aptitude, you won’t be stuck doing one job during harvest.
As above with around half of the time spent in the lab providing the winemakers and viticulturists with accurate pH, TA and Brix measurements and tasting samples.
What's in it for you?
We provide a meal during the busy part of the season, a competitive salary, and the opportunity to work with a diverse range of vineyards, varieties and award-winning wines.
Due to the current closure of the New Zealand border, we are only accepting applications from New Zealand residents or international applicants who are currently in New Zealand and have a valid work visa for the entire harvest period. As we have a cellar door onsite, if you’re offered a position with us, you’ll need to provide your My Vaccine Pass prior to commence of employment.
Apply via the button above and include a CV, cover letter, two references and please indicate which role you are applying for.
Only people eligible to work in this country should apply for this position. Please provide evidence of your work visa or citizenship.

- Jobseekers should be aware that the start and finish dates of harvest work employment may change from those suggested by wineries at the time of your job offer. Vintage dates can not accurately be predicted.
It is therefore important that you understand that depending on your employment arrangements with the employer there may be a period of time where you have no work or less work than you were expecting, and should have sufficient financial arrangements in place should this occur. Your actual start and finish dates may vary - if you have queries around this, check with your winery employer before booking airline tickets etc.
